Commnication Arts

Mon Mar 3, 2008, 9:27 PM
If you don't want to hear my tearful crying, please don't read.

I've been having a pretty good break and time on a roleplay site that I joined a while ago. It was all going good, up until this morning when I got online. I was suddenly attacked by someone who plays it over AIM over how I hurt someone I had been talking to the night before. Now, nothing from that chat was offensive at all, so I didn't know that I had hurt the person. It was the same as we had talked any time before, which we had done for a while now (pretty much since I joined the site). So later, when the person I hurt got online, I messaged them apologizing and explaining that I didn't know that I had hurt them. Now, later tonight, the person who attacked me was then attacking someone else. Now the three of us (not the one attacking) had been plotting ideas last night with our characters. I tried to mediate so someone else didn't get hurt, but I ended up being attacked as well, not only on how we hurt this person, which still wasn't clear, exactly, but then also on my post length, which on some boards are short because I'm replying to 4-5 lines, but are at the 6 sentence limit, and others are up to 10 paragraphs of over 6 sentences each. I don't really want to quit the site, and though things seem to have blown over, I'm still considering it. If it happens again, I might as well. No reason to stay on a site that I get attacked on, even if it's only by one person...

Now, back to my title. The past few weeks in my CA, we've been studying communication arts. Over 60% of the communications we receive are nonverbal (clothing, voice pitch, facial and body language, etc). Now, we've all be talking over the internet, which gives no actual contact with the people and no vocal messages. So we have 0 nonverbal communication going on. So, all we have is 40% maximum of communication going on. Now, that 40% also includes typos and what we guess at what's being said.

So, most of this whole fight was over something that we couldn't help as nothing that was said was offensive. We could not tell that the person we were talking to had gotten upset as all the chats I've had with them were identical, and previously, they'd never gotten upset (I think). So, there's my little sob story...And why I'm so depressed at the moment...
